Introduction
In general, black discoloration at the edge of the lunula (the crescent-shaped part of the nail) may be caused by external staining, trauma with bruising, onychomycosis (fungal nail infection), subungual melanoma, or nail damage due to lichen planus. If discomfort symptoms occur, it is recommended to seek timely medical evaluation and treatment at a正规 hospital. In daily life, maintain hand hygiene, avoid contact with irritants, and protect the nails to prevent injury.

Generally, black discoloration at the edge of the lunula (the white half-moon area on the nail) may be caused by external staining, trauma with bruising, onychomycosis (fungal nail infection), subungual melanoma, or nail damage due to lichen planus. If discomfort occurs, it is recommended to seek timely medical evaluation and treatment at a reputable hospital. Specific causes are analyzed as follows:

1. External Staining

Contact with dark substances such as hair dyes or ink can cause pigments to adhere to the nail surface, resulting in blackened edges of the lunula. Wash promptly with warm water and neutral soap, avoid direct contact with staining materials, and if necessary, gently brush the nails with a soft-bristled brush.

2. Trauma with Bruising

After compression or impact to the nail, capillaries beneath the nail may rupture and bleed. The blood clots and appears black. Apply cold compresses within the first 48 hours to stop bleeding, then switch to warm compresses after 48 hours to promote absorption of the bruise. Avoid further pressure on the nail and wait for the new nail to grow in naturally.

3. Onychomycosis (Fungal Nail Infection)

Fungal infection damages the nail plate structure, leading to pigment deposition, with blackening at the lunula edge accompanied by nail thickening and brittleness. Topical treatments such as bifonazole solution or terbinafine hydrochloride cream, along with oral fluconazole capsules, may be used under medical guidance. Keep nails dry and well-ventilated.

4. Subungual Melanoma

Overactivity of melanocytes in the nail matrix leads to excessive melanin production and accumulation under the nail, causing black discoloration at the lunula edge. Medical evaluation is required for accurate diagnosis. If stable and unchanged, regular monitoring may suffice; however, if there is evidence of spread, surgical removal of the melanin lesion under physician supervision may be necessary, followed by proper wound care.

5. Nail Damage from Lichen Planus

Lichen planus affecting the nail matrix disrupts normal nail growth, leading to nail pigmentation and darkening of the lunula. Treatments may include topical tretinoin cream or tacrolimus ointment, and oral hydroxychloroquine tablets, as directed by a physician. Avoid nail trauma and minimize irritation.

In daily life, maintain good hand hygiene and avoid contact with irritants. Protect the nails to prevent injury, regularly monitor nail changes, and seek medical attention promptly if abnormalities occur. Maintain a balanced diet to provide adequate nutrition for healthy nail growth.
