Introduction
If in the early recovery phase of pertussis, where severe coughing symptoms have only recently subsided and the respiratory mucosa is still healing, occasional mild coughing—perhaps just one or two episodes at night—may occur. This type of cough is usually irregular, not accompanied by shortness of breath, vomiting, or other discomforts, and its frequency gradually decreases as recovery progresses. It represents a normal part of the body's healing process.

Under normal circumstances, during the recovery phase of pertussis (whooping cough), occasional mild coughing at night may still occur. When recovery is progressing well and nearing completion, coughing typically subsides completely. If there are any concerns, it is advisable to seek medical consultation in advance. Detailed analysis is as follows:

If still in the early stage of the pertussis recovery phase—after severe coughing symptoms have just begun to ease—the respiratory mucosa is still repairing itself, which may lead to occasional light coughing at night, perhaps just one or two coughs. This type of cough is usually irregular, does not come with symptoms such as shortness of breath or vomiting, and its frequency gradually decreases over time. It represents a normal part of the body's healing process.

If the recovery phase has lasted for a considerable duration, with respiratory inflammation largely resolved and mucosal repair nearly complete, nighttime coughing generally no longer occurs. At this stage, daytime coughing has also mostly disappeared, bodily functions are gradually returning to normal, and no other discomfort is present—indicating that the illness has essentially resolved and there is no need for excessive concern.

During the recovery phase of pertussis, maintain indoor air humidity and avoid respiratory irritants such as dust and smoke. Dress warmly to prevent chilling, which could worsen symptoms. If nighttime coughing suddenly worsens or is accompanied by unusual symptoms, seek medical evaluation promptly.
