Where is the Jianzhen acupoint located?
The Jianzhen acupoint is located on the posterior aspect of the human shoulder, in the area just below and behind the shoulder joint. When the arm is adducted, it is situated 1 cun above the upper end of the posterior axillary fold. If massage of this point is needed due to shoulder discomfort, its precise location should be clearly identified beforehand to avoid blind pressure. If there is severe shoulder pain or limited range of motion, medical evaluation should be sought promptly.

The Jianzhen point belongs to the Small Intestine Meridian of Hand-Taiyang. Anatomically, it lies at the posterior border of the deltoid muscle, with deeper attachments including the teres major and latissimus dorsi muscles. The surrounding area contains branches of the axillary nerve as well as the circumflex scapular artery and vein. The point can be accurately located using surface anatomical landmarks: with the body standing or sitting naturally and the arm hanging down and adducted, measure 1 cun upward from the apex of the posterior axillary crease to locate the acupoint.
Palpation can assist in confirming the correct location; pressing this area typically produces a mild sensation of soreness or distension, without significant tenderness or sharp pain. In daily practice, gentle massage of this acupoint may help relieve shoulder fatigue. However, pressure should be carefully controlled to prevent excessive force that could lead to muscle injury. Clockwise circular massage is recommended, lasting 3–5 minutes per session.
Daily care should emphasize keeping the shoulder warm to prevent aggravation of discomfort from cold exposure, and avoiding prolonged maintenance of the same posture. Regular shoulder movement is advised to promote local blood circulation. Warm compress therapy may also be used to improve local metabolism, with the temperature maintained at 40–45°C for 15–20 minutes per session, performed 2–3 times weekly, which helps maintain normal physiological function of the shoulder.
