Introduction

Common symptoms of lumbar spine disorders include low back pain, numbness in the lower limbs, restricted mobility, weakness in the lower limbs, and radiating pain from the lower back to the legs. These symptoms typically arise from compression of nerves by degenerated lumbar vertebrae or surrounding soft tissues and may progressively impair daily activities. If discomfort in the lower back and legs persists and worsens, timely medical evaluation and treatment are essential.

1. Low back pain: Degeneration or strain of the lumbar spine irritates local soft tissues. Pain becomes particularly noticeable after prolonged sitting or standing and intensifies during bending or lifting heavy objects; mild relief may occur with rest.

2. Numbness in the lower limbs: Compression of lumbar nerve roots disrupts blood circulation and nerve conduction to the lower limbs, leading to numbness or a “wooden” sensation—especially in the buttocks and calves—with diminished tactile sensation. Prolonged sitting significantly exacerbates this numbness.

3. Restricted mobility: Structural damage to the lumbar spine causes pain during flexion, extension, or rotation, limiting normal bending and twisting movements. Large-range limb motions readily trigger pronounced pain.

4. Lower limb weakness: Chronic nerve compression impairs neuromuscular control, resulting in leg fatigue while walking, difficulty lifting the legs, and—in severe cases—gait instability and persistent heaviness or soreness in the lower limbs.

5. Radiating pain from the lower back to the legs: Pain originates in the lumbar region or buttocks and travels down the posterior thigh to the sole of the foot. Increased intraspinal pressure during coughing or straining intensifies this sharp, radiating pain.

In daily life, avoid prolonged sitting or standing and refrain from bending over to lift heavy objects. Sleep supine on a mattress with moderate firmness, and perform gentle stretching exercises for the lower back and lumbar region daily to alleviate sustained lumbar loading and slow disease progression.
