Introduction

Enamel hypoplasia is a developmental defect of dental hard tissues that occurs during tooth development, characterized by insufficient enamel thickness, fragile enamel texture, and surface defects. It is a common congenital dental disorder. When teeth exhibit structural defects, discoloration, or recurrent sensitivity, timely medical evaluation and intervention are essential.

This condition most commonly occurs during the enamel calcification period in infants and young children. Systemic nutritional deficiencies, infections, or local abnormalities in tooth development can all impede normal enamel formation. Affected teeth often display white spots, pits, or enamel defects; their caries resistance is significantly lower than that of healthy teeth, rendering them highly susceptible to dental caries and dentin hypersensitivity. Mild cases may be managed conservatively with fluoride application and resin-based sealants to protect the dental structure and prevent further deterioration.

In severe enamel hypoplasia, substantial tooth structure loss is present; protective measures alone cannot adequately address morphological or functional impairments. Professional restorative interventions are therefore required. Clinically, options include composite resin veneers, porcelain veneers, or full-coverage crowns to restore missing tooth structure, reestablish normal tooth contour and masticatory function, and provide a barrier against external stimuli—thereby reducing hypersensitivity and preventing secondary caries.

For daily prevention, maintain thorough brushing twice daily, limit frequent consumption of acidic or sugary foods, use fluoride-containing toothpaste to reinforce dental structure, and avoid forcefully biting or chewing hard objects—thus continuously lowering the risk of tooth wear and caries development.
