Can atrial fibrillation affect sleep?
Atrial fibrillation (AF) significantly impairs sleep quality and is a common cardiac cause of nighttime insomnia, vivid dreams, and frequent awakenings. Most AF patients experience varying degrees of sleep disturbance, with nocturnal arrhythmias exerting the most pronounced disruptive effect on sleep. Prolonged poor sleep, in turn, increases cardiac workload and sustains sympathetic nervous system hyperactivity, further promoting recurrent AF episodes—a vicious cycle. Some patients may also develop anxiety due to nocturnal arrhythmias, exacerbating insomnia. Effective rhythm control can significantly improve sleep quality and overall restorative sleep.
