Can people with gout drink cola or Sprite?
Individuals with gout are advised against consuming sugary carbonated beverages such as cola and Sprite. High-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) in these drinks interferes with uric acid metabolism and elevates serum uric acid levels, increasing the risk of acute gout attacks. If recurrent redness, swelling, and pain occur in the joints, prompt medical evaluation is essential.
Cola and Sprite are high-sugar carbonated beverages. Upon ingestion, the large amounts of HFCS they contain are metabolized into uric acid and simultaneously inhibit renal excretion of uric acid. Even though these beverages contain no purines, they still promote uric acid accumulation in the body, raising the likelihood of gout flares and hindering long-term disease control.

Some patients mistakenly believe that carbonated beverages are safe to drink simply because they contain no purines. While occasional, small intake may not trigger immediate symptoms, chronic consumption persistently burdens metabolic pathways. Frequent consumption also increases risks of obesity and metabolic disorders, indirectly worsening gout—thus, individuals with gout should avoid such carbonated drinks whenever possible.
Plain water should be the primary beverage choice. Strictly avoid all sugary drinks, carefully manage overall caloric intake, and combine this with appropriate physical activity to regulate metabolism and minimize all potential triggers of gout flares.
