Can pneumothorax resolve spontaneously?
Small, localized pneumothorax may resolve spontaneously. When lung compression is mild, the body can gradually absorb the air in the pleural cavity, restoring normal lung function. In contrast, moderate-to-severe pneumothorax does not resolve on its own; it continuously compresses the lung and impairs respiration, necessitating medical intervention. If you experience chest tightness, chest pain, or shortness of breath, seek medical evaluation and treatment promptly.

Pneumothorax is a condition caused by rupture of the lung tissue, allowing air to leak into the pleural cavity. In mild cases—where lung collapse is minimal—free air in the pleural space may be slowly and spontaneously absorbed under strict bed rest, enabling gradual re-expansion of the lung without invasive treatment. Patients must remain strictly bedridden, minimize physical activity, receive supplemental oxygen to facilitate air absorption, and undergo regular monitoring of pulmonary recovery.
In moderate-to-severe pneumothorax—characterized by substantial lung collapse—the lung cannot heal spontaneously, and the condition may progressively worsen. Clinically, common interventions include thoracentesis (needle aspiration) and closed-chest tube drainage to evacuate accumulated air. In cases of extensive lung injury, surgical repair of the lung tissue may be required to relieve pulmonary compression and restore normal respiratory and circulatory function.
During recovery, maintain steady, controlled breathing; avoid vigorous exercise and breath-holding maneuvers; ensure adequate rest; follow a light, regular diet; and gradually improve overall physical fitness. Refrain from any activities known to trigger recurrence of pneumothorax.
