Neurodermatitis is a common chronic inflammatory skin condition, frequently triggered by psychological and neurological factors. Its hallmark symptoms include paroxysmal, intense pruritus (itching) and localized thickening and roughening of the skin. The disease tends to recur and persist chronically. If persistent itching and skin thickening fail to improve, prompt medical consultation and standardized treatment are essential.

The onset of neurodermatitis is closely associated with excessive mental stress, chronic sleep deprivation, and anxiety. Local mechanical irritation—such as repeated rubbing or scratching—can also trigger or exacerbate the condition. Predilection sites include the nape of the neck, elbows, and lower back. In early stages, patients may experience only pruritus without visible skin lesions; however, repeated scratching gradually leads to lichenification—skin thickening and deepened skin markings. Clinically, topical anti-inflammatory and antipruritic medications constitute the mainstay of treatment, supplemented by interventions aimed at regulating nervous system function, thereby effectively controlling pruritus and alleviating skin lesions.

Chronic, repetitive scratching is the primary reason for difficulty in achieving complete cure. Mechanical stimulation during pruritic episodes causes ongoing skin damage, establishing a vicious cycle of “itch–scratch–itch.” In some patients, insufficient sleep or consumption of spicy foods may precipitate frequent relapses. For severe cases, systemic therapeutic approaches—including neuromodulation and desensitization strategies—may be employed adjunctively to stabilize neural function, reduce cutaneous hypersensitivity, and lower the recurrence rate.

In daily life, maintaining emotional stability and avoiding mood fluctuations, ensuring adequate and regular sleep, adhering to a bland diet low in spicy or irritating foods, minimizing repeated friction or contact with affected areas, and consistently practicing gentle skin care are all crucial for sustaining skin homeostasis and preventing disease flares.
