Common urological conditions affecting women during menopause include atrophic urethritis, urethritis, cystitis, stress urinary incontinence, and overactive bladder syndrome. Declining estrogen levels alter the condition of the urogenital mucosa and reduce local resistance, thereby predisposing women to various urological problems. 1. Atrophic Urethritis: Hormonal changes during menopause cause thinning and atrophy of the urethral mucosa, resulting in a progressive decline in local defense capacity. This makes the urethra more susceptible to bacterial invasion and recurrent inflammation. Symptoms commonly include urethral burning, dysuria (painful or uncomfortable urination), and mild stinging sensations. The condition tends to recur and persist; without proper management, chronic urethritis may heighten urethral sensitivity and compromise overall urological health.

3. Cystitis: Hormonal fluctuations induce degenerative changes in the bladder mucosa, diminishing its urine-storage capacity and weakening local immunity. Bacteria may thus readily colonize the bladder, triggering inflammation. Typical symptoms include urinary frequency and lower abdominal pressure or discomfort. Due to generally reduced immune function during menopause, cystitis recovery is often slower and prone to recurrence.
4. Stress Urinary Incontinence: During menopause, pelvic floor muscle relaxation and diminished urethral support reduce resistance against intra-abdominal pressure. Even minor increases in abdominal pressure—such as those occurring during coughing, laughing, or standing physical activity—can lead to involuntary urine leakage. Without timely intervention, this condition may impair daily activities and create a favorable environment for bacterial growth, potentially leading to secondary urinary tract infections.
5. Overactive Bladder Syndrome: Hormonal fluctuations can heighten bladder nerve sensitivity, causing the detrusor muscle to contract excessively and frequently—even in the absence of infection. This results in urinary frequency and urgency. Increased nocturia (nighttime urination) disrupts sleep patterns and, over time, adversely affects both physical rest and mental well-being.
In daily life, drink plenty of warm water, maintain a light and balanced diet, consistently perform pelvic floor muscle exercises, practice gentle and appropriate genital hygiene, avoid prolonged sitting or urinary retention, and adhere to regular sleep-wake cycles to enhance overall immunity and reduce the frequency of urological disorders.
