Does cardiac angiography harm the body?
Cardiac angiography is an invasive diagnostic procedure that carries a certain risk of harm; however, the overall incidence of complications is low, and most individuals tolerate it well. The clinical benefits of the examination typically outweigh the associated risks. If persistent physical discomfort occurs after the procedure, prompt medical evaluation is advised.

During cardiac angiography, a blood vessel is punctured to inject contrast medium. Potential complications at the puncture site include bleeding and hematoma formation; in rare cases, vascular injury may occur. Since the contrast medium is primarily excreted via the kidneys, patients with impaired renal function may experience increased renal stress. Additionally, there is an extremely low risk of cardiac-related reactions—such as arrhythmias—during the procedure.
This examination is commonly used to diagnose coronary artery disease (CAD). When significant coronary artery stenosis is identified, interventional treatment (e.g., angioplasty or stent placement) can often be performed concurrently. Prior to the procedure, liver and kidney function, as well as vascular anatomy, are carefully assessed to minimize the risk of adverse events. After the examination, measures to accelerate contrast medium elimination—such as adequate hydration—are recommended; most mild symptoms gradually resolve, and patients need not fear this procedure unduly.
Post-procedure, patients should maintain sufficient fluid intake to facilitate the excretion of metabolic byproducts, observe appropriate rest, limit consumption of high-fat foods, maintain emotional stability, and thereby reduce cardiac workload to support optimal recovery.
