What Causes a Sore Throat?
Throat pain may result from excessive vocal strain, irritation from spicy or hot foods, acute pharyngitis, acute tonsillitis, or pharyngeal mucosal ulcers. Symptoms can be alleviated through vocal rest, dietary adjustments, and symptomatic medication. However, if throat pain progressively worsens or impairs swallowing, prompt medical consultation is essential.
1. Excessive Vocal Strain: Prolonged speaking or loud shouting causes continuous friction and irritation of the pharyngeal mucosa, leading to mild mucosal congestion and dryness. Increased pharyngeal sensitivity may cause dryness and pain. It is recommended to minimize prolonged loud speaking, avoid overusing the voice, and drink warm water regularly to keep the throat moist.
2. Irritation from Spicy Foods: Frequent consumption of spicy or excessively hot foods directly irritates and may even scald the superficial pharyngeal mucosa. This results in minor mucosal injury, causing sharp, stabbing throat pain and dry discomfort. A light, bland diet is advised; spicy and overheated foods should be avoided to reduce irritative damage to the pharyngeal mucosa.

3. Acute Pharyngitis: Pathogens invade the pharyngeal mucosa, triggering acute inflammatory responses characterized by hyperemia and edema. Mucosal damage leads to prominent sore throat, often accompanied by dryness and mild expectoration. Under physician guidance, medications such as Cetylpyridinium Iodide Lozenges, Pudilan Anti-inflammatory Oral Liquid, or Cefalexin Capsules may be used to alleviate symptoms.
4. Acute Tonsillitis: An acute inflammatory reaction occurs in the tonsils, resulting in glandular hyperemia, swelling, and inflammatory irritation of surrounding pharyngeal tissues. Patients experience throat swelling and pain, with significantly intensified pain during swallowing. Under medical supervision, Amoxicillin Capsules, Lanqin Oral Liquid, or Metronidazole Tablets may be prescribed to relieve discomfort.
5. Pharyngeal Mucosal Ulcers: Superficial ulceration of the pharyngeal mucosa may develop due to irritation or mild infection. These ulcers become irritated by swallowing and saliva, causing persistent throat pain. Under physician guidance, medications such as Kangfuxin Liquid, Vitamin B2 tablets, or Xigua Shuang lozenges may be used to improve symptoms.
In daily life, maintain a light diet, drink ample warm water, allow adequate vocal rest, avoid staying up late or overexertion, and minimize external irritants to effectively protect pharyngeal mucosal health.
