What Causes Wrist Joint Pain?
Wrist joint pain may result from overuse of the wrist, local cold exposure, tenosynovitis, wrist synovitis, or carpal tunnel syndrome. Symptoms can be alleviated by reducing joint activity, maintaining warmth and protection, and using appropriate medications. If pain recurs and interferes with daily function, prompt medical evaluation is recommended.
1. Wrist Overuse Injury: Prolonged, repetitive motions—such as lifting the hand or gripping objects—place sustained mechanical stress on the wrist joint and surrounding soft tissues. This leads to fatigue of local muscles and ligaments, resulting in aching, swelling, and dull pain. It is advisable to minimize repetitive wrist movements, take regular breaks to relax the wrist, and avoid prolonged static postures involving forceful exertion.
2. Local Cold Exposure: Chronic exposure of the wrist to low temperatures impairs local microcirculation temporarily. Mild spasm of soft tissues may occur, causing wrist joint stiffness and pain. Daily wrist warming is recommended; avoid direct exposure to cold drafts, and apply gentle heat therapy to the wrist after physical activity.

3. Tenosynovitis: Repeated friction between tendons and their surrounding tendon sheaths triggers localized aseptic inflammation and mild soft-tissue edema. Pain and slight restriction of motion worsen during wrist movement due to increased friction. Under physician guidance, medications such as diclofenac sodium sustained-release tablets, ibuprofen gel, or celecoxib capsules may be used to alleviate symptoms.
4. Wrist Synovitis: Minor injury or irritation to the wrist synovium induces an aseptic inflammatory response, leading to mild synovial hyperemia. Small amounts of inflammatory exudate accumulate within the joint cavity, resulting in wrist swelling, pain, and discomfort during movement. Patients may use etoricoxib tablets, flurbiprofen gel patches, or synovitis-specific herbal tablets—as directed by a physician—to relieve symptoms.
5. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: Local tissue edema compresses the median nerve within the carpal tunnel, disrupting neural conduction. This manifests as wrist pain, often accompanied by numbness or tingling in the fingertips and reduced grip strength. Under medical supervision, medications such as mecobalamin tablets, vitamin B12 tablets, or loxoprofen sodium tablets may be prescribed to improve symptoms.
To maintain optimal wrist health, practice rational wrist usage: avoid excessive loading and frequent flexion/extension, ensure adequate local warmth, balance work and rest, perform moderate soft-tissue relaxation exercises, and protect overall wrist joint function.
