Introduction
Dietary Restrictions for Kidney Stones: 1. Avoid foods high in oxalate, as excessive oxalate can accumulate in the body and combine with calcium to form calcium oxalate stones—for example, spinach, celery, and similar vegetables. 2. Avoid foods rich in purines, as abnormal purine metabolism may lead to increased urinary oxalate excretion and subsequent stone formation—such as organ meats and seafood. 3. Avoid alcohol consumption, as it may exacerbate the condition.

Kidney stones are crystalline deposits—such as calcium, oxalate, uric acid, and cystine—that abnormally accumulate in the kidneys. They represent a common and frequently occurring urological disorder, with a higher incidence in males than females, predominantly affecting young and middle-aged adults. There is no significant difference in incidence between the left and right kidneys, and approximately 90% of kidney stones contain calcium, with calcium oxalate stones being the most prevalent. Patients diagnosed with kidney stones must pay careful attention to dietary choices. So, which foods should be avoided? The following provides answers.

Foods to Avoid with Kidney Stones

1. Foods High in Oxalate
Many kidney stones—particularly calcium oxalate stones—form due to excessive accumulation of oxalate-containing compounds in the body. This accumulation often results from overconsumption of oxalate-rich foods. Excessive intake leads to elevated oxalate levels, promoting calcium oxalate crystal formation and eventual stone development. Common high-oxalate foods include spinach and celery. Patients with more severe symptoms should especially avoid such foods to effectively manage their condition.

2. Foods High in Purines

Excessive consumption of purine-rich foods by patients with kidney stones may disrupt purine metabolism, leading to increased urinary excretion and deposition of oxalates—and ultimately contributing to stone formation. Such foods hinder recovery from kidney stones. Examples include organ meats, seafood, peanuts, green beans, and spinach—all notably high in purines.

3. Alcohol
Patients with kidney stones must strictly avoid alcohol. Excessive alcohol intake can exacerbate the condition and worsen stone-related complications.

In summary, individuals with kidney stones should avoid foods high in oxalate (e.g., spinach, celery), foods rich in purines (e.g., organ meats, seafood, peanuts, green beans), and alcoholic beverages.
