Introduction
Dry, tight lips may result from environmental dryness, frequent lip licking or biting, exfoliative cheilitis, vitamin deficiencies, angular cheilitis, or other causes. Symptoms can be improved by increasing ambient humidity, correcting harmful habits, and using appropriate medications. If symptoms persist for a prolonged period or recurrent peeling occurs, prompt medical evaluation is recommended.

Chapped and tight lips may result from environmental dryness, frequent lip-licking or biting, exfoliative cheilitis, vitamin deficiencies, angular cheilitis, and other causes. Symptoms can be alleviated by improving ambient humidity, correcting harmful habits, and using targeted medications. If symptoms persist long-term or recurrent peeling occurs, prompt medical consultation is advised.

1. Environmental Dryness: Prolonged exposure to dry, windy environments deprives the lip mucosa of its natural lipid protective layer, leading to rapid water evaporation. Dehydration of the stratum corneum causes shrinkage, resulting in dryness and a sensation of tightness. It is recommended to use a humidifier regularly to increase ambient humidity and consistently apply lip balm to lock in moisture.

2. Frequent Lip-Licking or Biting: Habitual licking or biting off dead skin on the lips damages the superficial mucosal protective barrier. As saliva evaporates, it further depletes moisture, exacerbating dryness and tightness—and potentially causing mild flaking. It is advisable to break these harmful habits and avoid touching or manually peeling the lips with hands.

3. Exfoliative Cheilitis: Superficial inflammation of the lip mucosa triggered by external irritants disrupts normal mucosal metabolism. This leads to persistent dryness and tightness, accompanied by recurrent scaling and mild erythema. Under physician guidance, topical medications such as tacrolimus ointment, vitamin E cream, or desonide cream may be used to alleviate symptoms.

4. Vitamin Deficiency: Deficiencies in multiple vitamins impair normal mucosal metabolism in the lips. The compromised skin barrier renders lips prone to chronic dryness, tightness, cracking, and scaling. Under medical supervision, patients may take supplements such as compound vitamin B tablets, vitamin C tablets, or vitamin A soft capsules to relieve discomfort.

5. Angular Cheilitis: Local inflammatory damage caused by bacterial or fungal infection at the lips and oral commissures disrupts the lip’s water–oil balance, resulting in generalized dryness and tightness—often accompanied by fissuring at the corners of the mouth. Per physician instruction, topical agents such as erythromycin ointment or clotrimazole cream, along with oral zinc gluconate tablets, may be prescribed to improve symptoms.

Routine lip moisturization, adequate intake of warm water, a light and balanced diet, consistent nutritional supplementation, and avoidance of harmful habits like lip-licking or biting are essential for maintaining healthy lip barrier function.
