Introduction
During a cold or cough, avoid spicy and irritating foods, raw or cold foods, greasy or heavy foods, overly sweet foods, and stimulating beverages. Inappropriate dietary choices may exacerbate throat and airway irritation and delay recovery. If you experience persistent severe coughing, chest tightness or wheezing, or high fever that does not subside, seek medical attention at a hospital promptly.

During a cold or cough, it is important to avoid spicy and irritating foods, raw or cold foods, greasy and heavy foods, overly sweet foods, and stimulating beverages. Inappropriate dietary choices can exacerbate irritation of the throat and airways, delay recovery, and worsen symptoms. If you experience persistent severe coughing, chest tightness, wheezing, or high fever that does not subside, seek medical attention at a hospital promptly.

1. Spicy and irritating foods: Foods such as chili peppers, Sichuan peppercorns, and raw garlic directly irritate the pharyngeal mucosa, worsening throat congestion, swelling, and pain. They may also increase airway sensitivity, leading to more frequent coughing and intensifying throat dryness and itching—hindering resolution of respiratory inflammation.

2. Raw and cold foods: Iced beverages, chilled fruits, and refrigerated cold dishes can stimulate the smooth muscles of the respiratory tract, potentially triggering bronchospasm. They may also reduce local immune resistance, exacerbate excessive phlegm production, impair spleen-stomach digestion and absorption, and thereby slow down overall recovery.

3. Greasy and heavy foods: High-fat foods—including fatty meats, fried foods, and barbecued items—place additional metabolic strain on the body. They promote increased phlegm production and make secretions thicker and harder to expel, thereby worsening coughing and expectoration.

4. Overly sweet foods: Candies, preserved fruits, and sweet cakes stimulate excess phlegm secretion and cause phlegm to become viscous and difficult to clear. This increases throat stickiness and discomfort, triggers recurrent dry cough, and prolongs the duration of cough symptoms.

5. Stimulating beverages: Strong tea, coffee, and alcoholic drinks interfere with rest, irritate the respiratory mucosa, cause throat dryness and discomfort, and may impair the efficacy of medications. Such beverages should therefore be avoided entirely while ill.

In daily life, drink plenty of warm water and consume light, easily digestible foods. Ensure adequate rest, maintain appropriate indoor humidity, and minimize exposure to external odors to help gradually alleviate respiratory discomfort.
