Introduction
Whether melanoma can be cured depends on its stage at diagnosis. Early-stage melanoma—when the lesion is localized—has a relatively high cure rate; however, once the disease progresses to intermediate or advanced stages with regional or distant metastasis, the likelihood of cure decreases significantly. Melanoma is highly malignant and tends to progress rapidly. Rapid enlargement of a skin mole, ulceration, or bleeding warrants prompt medical evaluation for screening and diagnosis.

As the disease advances to intermediate or late stages, the tumor invades deeper tissues and may metastasize to regional lymph nodes and distant organs—including vital internal organs—making it increasingly difficult to control and substantially shortening overall survival.

In clinical practice, complete surgical excision of the primary lesion is the cornerstone of treatment for early-stage melanoma, aiming to eradicate all malignant tissue and halt disease progression. For patients with intermediate- or advanced-stage disease, adjuvant systemic therapies—including immunotherapy and targeted therapy—are employed to suppress tumor cell proliferation and delay disease progression. Regular whole-body surveillance imaging and clinical assessments are essential to monitor disease status and promptly detect any signs of recurrence or metastasis.

In daily life, rigorous sun protection—including minimizing prolonged direct ultraviolet (UV) exposure—is critical. Individuals should routinely inspect their skin for changes in existing moles and avoid repeated mechanical irritation or trauma to moles (e.g., friction, scratching, or shaving over them). Maintaining overall skin health in this manner helps reduce the risk of malignant transformation.
