Gout patients are not strictly prohibited from consuming seafood; instead, they should select seafood based on its purine content. High-purine seafood may trigger gout attacks, whereas low-purine seafood may be consumed in small amounts. If sudden redness, swelling, warmth, and pain occur in the joints—or if gout attacks become frequent—prompt medical consultation is essential to adjust the treatment plan.

Patients with gout are not entirely prohibited from consuming seafood; rather, choices should be made based on purine content. High-purine seafood may trigger gout attacks, whereas low-purine seafood may be consumed in small amounts. If sudden redness, swelling, heat, and pain occur in the joints—or if gout flares frequently—prompt medical consultation is essential to adjust the management plan.

Seafood varies widely in purine content. Shellfish, sardines, and anchovies are high-purine foods that elevate serum uric acid levels and provoke joint inflammation; they must be strictly avoided during acute gout flares. Shrimp and crab contain moderate purine levels and may be consumed in very small quantities only when the disease is stable. Some marine fish have relatively low purine content and may be consumed sparingly by individuals whose gout is well-controlled. After eating seafood, monitor for any joint discomfort; discontinue consumption immediately if pain develops.

In clinical practice, all types of seafood must be strictly avoided during the acute phase of gout. During remission, low- or moderate-purine seafood may be cautiously trialed in small amounts—but portion sizes per meal should remain limited. Additionally, drink ample water to promote uric acid excretion, and avoid pairing seafood with beer or rich broths. Dietary modifications alone cannot replace pharmacologic treatment; patients must follow their physician’s instructions to achieve and maintain target serum uric acid levels.

On a daily basis, ensure adequate hydration, limit intake of high-fat and high-sugar foods, and engage regularly in gentle physical activity. Maintain a healthy body weight, avoid alcohol and sugar-sweetened beverages (especially those high in fructose), and minimize all known triggers of hyperuricemia to support stable metabolic function.
