When Can Babies Start Eating Complementary Foods?
Infants can begin complementary feeding around six months of age—neither too early nor too late. The decision should be based on multiple developmental cues, such as the disappearance of the tongue-thrust reflex and the ability to sit upright unassisted. Introducing solids too early may overburden the immature digestive system. If an infant develops persistent diarrhea or recurrent allergic reactions after starting complementary foods, prompt medical consultation is essential to reassess and adjust the feeding plan.

Approximately around six months, infants’ gastrointestinal digestive enzymes gradually mature, and their oral motor skills—including chewing and swallowing—begin to develop. At this stage, breast milk or formula alone can no longer adequately meet their increasing requirements for iron and other essential nutrients. Introducing complementary foods too early—before the gastrointestinal tract is sufficiently mature—may lead to vomiting, diarrhea, or allergic reactions. Conversely, delaying introduction too long may result in inadequate intake of trace elements, potentially impairing taste development and the establishment of chewing skills.
Complementary feeding should follow the principles of progressing from thin to thick textures and from single-ingredient to increasingly diverse foods. Iron-fortified rice cereal is recommended as the first complementary food. Begin with small amounts and closely monitor stool patterns and skin condition. Once well-tolerated, gradually introduce vegetable purées, fruit purées, and meat purées. Breast milk or formula remains the primary source of nutrition; complementary foods serve only as supplements, and new foods should be introduced gradually and systematically.
When preparing complementary foods, always use fresh, high-quality ingredients and minimize added seasonings—avoid adding sugar or salt entirely. Respect your baby’s natural feeding rhythm; never force-feed. Instead, encourage practice and exploration during meals to foster the development of chewing, swallowing, taste perception, and gastrointestinal function.
