Can air conditioning be used when a child has a fever?
It is acceptable to use air conditioning moderately when a child has a fever. Maintaining an appropriate room temperature facilitates heat dissipation from the body and helps alleviate discomfort caused by excessive heat. However, the air conditioner temperature should not be set too low, direct airflow onto the child’s body must be avoided, and indoor ventilation should be ensured. If the child experiences persistent high fever or appears lethargy, prompt medical evaluation is essential to identify the underlying cause of the fever.

During fever, the body generates more heat than it can dissipate; a hot, stuffy environment exacerbates this sensation of overheating and hinders the return of body temperature to normal. Setting the air conditioner to 24–26°C is generally appropriate. Ensure that the air outlet does not blow directly toward the child’s head or torso—avoid exposing the child to cold drafts. Prolonged confinement in a tightly sealed room leads to poor air quality and increases the risk of cross-infection; therefore, windows should be opened every few hours to refresh indoor air and maintain adequate circulation.
Fever management primarily focuses on promoting heat dissipation—not “bundling up” with heavy blankets to induce sweating. For low-grade fever, emphasis should be placed on hydration and optimizing ambient temperature. When body temperature rises above the clinically indicated threshold, pediatric-specific antipyretics may be administered. In air-conditioned environments, dress the child in lightweight, easily adjustable clothing; if hands or feet feel cool, cover those areas lightly with a thin blanket—but avoid excessively lowering the room temperature, which may lead to chilling and worsen the condition.
Encourage frequent intake of warm plain water and minimize strenuous activity. Ensure adequate rest and sleep. Monitor for sweating, and promptly change damp clothing to support the child’s body in smoothly navigating through the febrile phase.
