Myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) is a hematologic disorder characterized by abnormal hematopoiesis in the bone marrow. It involves disordered development of hematopoietic cells, leading to the production of large numbers of dysplastic, ineffective blood cells, which results in symptoms such as anemia, fatigue, and bleeding. The disease typically progresses gradually, and in some cases, it may transform into acute leukemia. Frequent fatigue and recurrent bleeding warrant prompt medical evaluation and diagnostic screening.

MDS predominantly affects middle-aged and older adults. Abnormal development of hematopoietic stem cells constitutes the core pathological feature: although the bone marrow exhibits persistent hypercellularity, blood cells fail to mature normally, resulting in peripheral cytopenias—including anemia (low red blood cell count), neutropenia (low white blood cell count), and thrombocytopenia (low platelet count). Common symptoms include pallor, dizziness, fatigue, impaired immunity, and skin ecchymoses. Disease progression rates vary significantly among individuals.

Clinical management is guided by risk stratification. Low-risk patients primarily receive supportive care—such as blood transfusions and agents to improve hematopoietic function. High-risk patients require more intensive interventions, including chemotherapy and allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, to control disease progression and prevent transformation. Standardized clinical interventions can stabilize hematopoietic function, reduce the risk of disease deterioration, and prolong survival.

In daily life, maintain a clean diet and hygienic living environment; avoid trauma and bruising to minimize bleeding risk. Ensure regular rest to enhance physical tolerance, consume a balanced diet to support nutritional needs, and sustain baseline organ function—thereby aiding long-term disease stability.
