Introduction
Pregnant women can assess whether labor is imminent by observing changes in uterine contractions, the appearance of “show” (blood-tinged vaginal discharge), rupture of membranes (“water breaking”), descent of the fetal head, and a sensation of heaviness or pressure in the abdomen. These physiological signs progressively appear as labor approaches. If there is a large volume of fluid leakage or persistent, severe abdominal pain, prompt medical evaluation and treatment at a hospital are recommended.

Pregnant women can assess whether labor is imminent by observing changes in uterine contractions, the appearance of “show” (bloody show), rupture of membranes (“water breaking”), descent of the fetal head, and abdominal heaviness or pressure—these physiological signs progressively appear as labor approaches. If symptoms such as a large volume of fluid leakage or persistent, severe abdominal pain occur, prompt medical evaluation and treatment at a hospital are recommended.

  1. Monitoring uterine contractions: The uterus begins contracting rhythmically, with intervals between contractions gradually shortening and duration of each contraction lengthening. Pain intensifies progressively and does not subside with rest—this is a core indicator of impending labor.

  2. Bloody show: A small amount of blood-tinged vaginal discharge appears, mixed with cervical mucus. The volume of bleeding is typically less than that of a normal menstrual period. Most women enter active labor within several days after noticing the show.

  3. Rupture of membranes (“water breaking”): A clear, odorless fluid leaks uncontrollably from the vagina; the volume may vary. Leakage often increases with changes in body position. Once the amniotic membranes rupture, both mother and fetus face an elevated risk of infection, necessitating immediate medical attention and appropriate management.

  4. Descent of the fetal head: The fetal head gradually engages into the maternal pelvis, relieving pressure on the upper abdomen. Breathing becomes easier, gastric discomfort diminishes, while increased pressure on the bladder leads to more frequent urination.

  5. Abdominal heaviness or pressure: As the fetal head presses against pelvic floor tissues, women experience sensations of downward pressure and low-back aching. This persistent lumbar discomfort tends to worsen with walking or physical activity.

As the due date approaches, maintain regular sleep-wake cycles, eat small, frequent meals to conserve energy, minimize solo outings, prepare all necessary items for delivery, remain attentive to bodily signals, and stay emotionally calm while awaiting the onset of labor.
