What Causes Cervicitis?
Cervicitis is an inflammatory condition of the cervix triggered by various factors, including pathogen invasion, mechanical injury, vaginal microbiota imbalance, physical or chemical irritation, and hormonal fluctuations. When the cervical mucosal barrier is compromised, pathogens can invade and proliferate, triggering a localized inflammatory response. If symptoms such as abnormal vaginal discharge (e.g., increased volume or altered appearance) or persistent lower abdominal heaviness/pain occur, prompt medical evaluation and treatment are recommended.
1. Pathogen Invasion: Bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens invading cervical mucosal tissue disrupt the local structural integrity of the natural defense barrier. Sexual intercourse, intrauterine procedures, and other exposures may introduce pathogens; when cervical mucosal immunity is weakened, infection ensues, leading to cervicitis.
2. Mechanical Injury: Childbirth, spontaneous or induced abortion, and intrauterine surgical procedures can cause varying degrees of trauma to the cervical mucosa. Once the mucosa is damaged, pathogens gain easier access for colonization and proliferation. Repeated induced abortions or frequent intrauterine interventions significantly increase the risk of developing cervicitis.

3. Vaginal Microbiota Imbalance: Disruption of the normal vaginal microbial ecosystem allows opportunistic or pathogenic microorganisms to overgrow and spread. Inflammation extending from the vagina to the cervix can induce cervicitis. Recurrent episodes of vaginitis chronically irritate the cervical mucosa, thereby elevating the likelihood of cervicitis development.
4. Physical and Chemical Irritation: Prolonged use of irritating intimate hygiene products or frequent douching disrupts the protective mucosal barrier of the cervix and alters the stable vaginal microenvironment. Chronic irritation of cervical tissues consequently triggers an inflammatory response.
5. Hormonal Fluctuations: Abnormally elevated estrogen levels promote ectropion—outward displacement of cervical columnar epithelium. This change compromises local cervical tissue immunity, rendering it more susceptible to pathogen invasion and increasing the long-term risk of cervicitis.
Maintain good perineal hygiene in daily life: keep the external genitalia clean and dry, minimize unnecessary intrauterine procedures, undergo routine gynecological examinations regularly, seek timely medical intervention upon symptom onset, and sustain overall reproductive health to reduce the risk of cervicitis.
