Introduction
Onychomycosis—commonly known as “gray nail”—is a prevalent nail disorder caused by fungal infection of the nail plate or nail bed. It alters the color, texture, and shape of the nail and is contagious, capable of spreading either to other nails on the same individual or to other people. Persistent nail thickening, cracking, and extensive discoloration warrant prompt medical evaluation and intervention.

Onychomycosis, commonly known as “gray nail,” is a prevalent nail disorder caused by fungal infection of the nail plate or nail bed. It alters the nail’s color, texture, and shape and is contagious—capable of spreading either to other nails on the same individual or to other people. Persistent nail thickening, cracking, and extensive discoloration warrant prompt medical evaluation and intervention.

Onychomycosis is most frequently caused by dermatophytes invading the nail tissues. Once fungi penetrate the nail bed, they proliferate continuously, disrupting the nail’s normal architecture and resulting in yellowing or graying, thickening, brittleness, and even nail shedding. In mild cases, topical antifungal agents applied directly to the affected nail may suffice; consistent, long-term use helps suppress fungal growth and gradually restores the damaged nail.

When the infection spreads or involves multiple nails, topical therapy alone often proves insufficient due to limited drug penetration and slower recovery. For individuals meeting appropriate health criteria, systemic oral antifungal therapy may be added to achieve comprehensive eradication of the fungus throughout the body. Completing the full prescribed course of treatment is essential to eliminate residual fungi thoroughly, minimize the risk of recurrence, and restore normal nail appearance and function.

In daily life, maintain clean and dry skin on hands and feet; change into breathable footwear and socks regularly; avoid prolonged exposure to damp environments; and routinely clean shoes and socks to reduce conditions favorable for fungal growth—thereby supporting sustained nail health.
