Introduction
Generally, start by washing the pear thoroughly and peeling it. Cut off the top to use as a lid, then carefully remove the core using a small knife and spoon—this helps prevent the resulting pear decoction from tasting sour or astringent. Add an appropriate amount of water to a pot and heat until nearly boiling; then add rock sugar and continue heating over low heat until fully dissolved. Once the rock sugar has completely melted, add the prepared pear pieces. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce to low heat and simmer for approximately 15 minutes.

Pears are an exceptionally common fruit, with numerous ways to enjoy them. Eating them raw is highly effective for quenching thirst and offers excellent health benefits. However, pears are considered a “cool” (yin) fruit in traditional Chinese medicine—especially when consumed raw—and thus possess potent heat-clearing and fire-purging properties. Nevertheless, excessive consumption should be avoided. When pears are boiled into a decoction, their heat-clearing and fire-purging effects become even more pronounced. So, how can pear water be prepared to effectively relieve cough? Below, we address this question.

How to Prepare Pear Water for Cough Relief

Generally, begin by thoroughly washing the pear and peeling it. Cut off the top to use as a lid, then carefully scoop out the core using a small knife and spoon—this prevents any astringent or bitter taste in the final decoction. Add an appropriate amount of water to a pot and bring it nearly to a boil; then add rock sugar and gently heat over low heat until fully dissolved. Once the rock sugar has melted, add the pear pieces. Bring to a vigorous boil, then reduce heat to low and simmer for approximately 15 minutes. For enhanced lung-moistening and cough-relieving effects, you may also add ingredients such as tremella fungus (silver ear), red dates (jujubes), and goji berries. First, cut the pear into small pieces and briefly blanch them in boiling water. Then, combine all ingredients in the pot and simmer for about 30 minutes; finally, reduce heat to low, add the goji berries, and continue simmering for another 10 minutes. Note, however, that pears are inherently cooling in nature; individuals with weak constitutions or compromised digestive function should limit intake to avoid gastrointestinal discomfort or additional strain on the body.

Knowledge Extension: Health Benefits of Rock Sugar Snow Pear

1. Moistens the Lungs and Resolves Phlegm

Rock sugar helps resolve phlegm and suppress coughs, while snow pears nourish the lungs, resolve phlegm, and alleviate coughing. When combined, they synergistically enhance lung-moistening, phlegm-resolving, and cough-suppressing effects. This is partly due to the abundant tannins present in rock sugar snow pear, which nourish pulmonary cells and improve pulmonary blood circulation—thereby promoting lung moisture and phlegm resolution.

2. Clears Heat and Reduces Internal Fire

Snow pears are among the best natural foods for clearing internal heat (“fire”). Excess internal heat often triggers coughing and, in severe cases, oral ulcers or sores on the tongue. Regularly consuming rock sugar snow pear helps clear heat and thereby prevent cough and oral ulceration. This effect stems from snow pears’ rich content of malic acid, citric acid, vitamins B₁, B₂, and C, and beta-carotene—all of which promote fluid production and clear heat.

3. Protects the Liver and Supports Heart Health

Rock sugar snow pear is rich in vitamin B complex and magnesium—both of which support cardiovascular health and offer protective benefits to the heart. It also exerts hepatoprotective effects. Patients with liver cirrhosis or hepatitis are encouraged to consume rock sugar snow pear regularly, as it helps protect liver function and may alleviate symptoms associated with cirrhosis.
