Introduction
Long-acting and short-acting oral contraceptives may be taken orally after meals, with no specific timing requirements and no need for an empty stomach. In contrast, emergency contraceptive pills must be taken on an empty stomach or at least two hours after a meal. The hormonal content of emergency contraceptives is many times higher than that of regular short-acting oral contraceptives. To accelerate drug metabolism, it is advisable to drink plenty of warm water at least two hours after taking the pill.

Contraceptives are generally categorized into three types: short-term (combined oral) contraceptives, emergency contraceptives, and long-term contraceptives. Long-term and short-term contraceptives may be taken orally after meals; there is no specific timing requirement, nor is fasting necessary.

In contrast, emergency contraceptives must be taken on an empty stomach or at least two hours after a meal. Emergency contraceptives contain hormone levels many times higher than those in regular short-term contraceptives. To accelerate drug metabolism and minimize potential adverse effects, it is advisable to drink plenty of warm water at least two hours after taking the medication.

Contraceptives are not 100% effective; failure rates may reach approximately 20%. If menstrual delay occurs, it is recommended to use a home pregnancy test kit to rule out pregnancy. Such tests yield accurate results if performed at least 12 days after potential conception.
