Nasal endoscopy is relatively simple, direct, and effective—it allows real-time visualization of the nasal cavity, mucosal surfaces, ostia (openings) of the sinuses, and surface features of any neoplasms, and it involves no ionizing radiation. However, it provides limited insight into endogenous (deep-seated) lesions or conditions within the sinus cavities. If a new growth is identified on the surface, further evaluation with nasopharyngeal CT or paranasal sinus CT is typically recommended to obtain a more comprehensive assessment of the lesion—including its size, extent, and whether there is bony destruction. In these aspects, CT offers clear advantages over nasal endoscopy.

Additional Information: Important Considerations for CT Scanning

1. Pregnancy Screening for Women

Women of childbearing age must first rule out pregnancy before undergoing contrast-enhanced CT. This precaution is essential because contrast-enhanced CT involves ionizing radiation, which may pose risks to the developing fetus if performed during pregnancy.

2. Removal of Metallic Objects

Prior to either non-contrast or contrast-enhanced CT, all metallic objects on or in the body must be removed. Metallic items can produce image artifacts during scanning, potentially compromising diagnostic accuracy.

3. Fasting Requirements

Typically, patients must fast (refrain from food and drink) for at least four hours prior to contrast-enhanced CT. This requirement is especially strict for abdominal CT scans, as residual gastrointestinal contents may interfere with image interpretation. To optimize diagnostic accuracy, contrast-enhanced CT is best scheduled in the morning.
