Introduction
1. Excessive liver fire: When the liver is impaired, the body’s metabolic functions are affected. 2. Diabetes: Dry mouth is an early warning sign of diabetes. 3. Hyperthyroidism: The body’s energy metabolism may accelerate significantly, thereby increasing the body’s demand for water. 4. Sjögren’s syndrome: This is, in fact, an autoimmune disorder.

Dry mouth and throat are common issues encountered in daily life. Strictly speaking, dry mouth is not a disease itself but rather a symptom—typically resolved simply by drinking water. If the symptom improves after hydration, it generally indicates no underlying health concerns. However, persistent dry mouth despite adequate fluid intake may signal an early warning sign of certain medical conditions. So, what causes chronic dry mouth and throat? Below, we address this question.

Causes of Chronic Dry Mouth and Throat

1. Excess Liver Fire

Individuals experiencing persistent dry mouth and throat—even after drinking water—should consider whether excess “liver fire” may be present. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), excessive liver fire is classically associated with dry mouth and throat. When liver function is impaired, the body’s metabolic processes become disrupted, hindering proper elimination of waste products—and thereby contributing to dry mouth and throat.

2. Diabetes

People with diabetes frequently experience dry mouth, thirst, increased appetite, and polydipsia (excessive water intake). Consequently, urine volume and frequency of urination also increase significantly. This leads to substantial fluid loss from the body, resulting in dry mouth and throat. Thus, persistent dry mouth may serve as an early warning sign of diabetes.

3. Hyperthyroidism

In patients with hyperthyroidism, the body’s energy metabolism accelerates markedly, increasing oxygen consumption and heat production. As heat dissipation also speeds up, the body requires more water—leading to dry mouth and throat.

4. Sjögren’s Syndrome

Sjögren’s syndrome is an autoimmune disorder commonly characterized by dry mouth and dry eyes. Initially, patients often notice reduced salivary flow, oral dryness, or a sticky sensation in the mouth—progressing to difficulty swallowing, especially dry foods (which require water to swallow), and frequent nocturnal awakenings due to severe oral dryness.
