How is macular degeneration treated?
The macula is a normal anatomical structure of the human retina, located at the posterior pole of the retina. Under adequate lighting conditions, it mediates central vision and enables fine-detail discrimination and color perception. Generally, any pathological condition affecting the macular region of the retina is termed a “macular disorder.” So, how is a macular disorder treated? Below, we address this question.

How Is a Macular Disorder Treated?
1. Daily Care
Since macular disorders most commonly lead to visual decline, dietary habits should emphasize light, non-irritating foods—avoiding spicy or stimulating items—and abstaining from smoking and alcohol consumption. Adequate sleep should be maintained, and late-night activities minimized. Excessive eye strain can cause ocular fatigue and exacerbate refractive errors in myopic individuals. Regular eye exercises—such as vertical and horizontal eye movements—help relax the extraocular muscles. Warm compresses are also highly effective for rapidly relieving eye fatigue.

2. Pharmacotherapy
Currently, the most widely used clinical treatment involves intravitreal injection of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) agents. By inhibiting VEGF activity, these drugs promote regression of abnormal new blood vessels, thereby slowing disease progression and improving visual function. Commonly used anti-VEGF agents include conbercept, ranibizumab, and aflibercept. In addition, vitamin supplements—such as vitamin C and vitamin E—may benefit visual health when taken in appropriate doses. However, all medications must be administered strictly under medical supervision.

3. Surgical Intervention
Surgery represents a definitive therapeutic option for macular degeneration. Three primary surgical approaches are currently employed: retinal transplantation, macular translocation, and subretinal excision. Laser therapy is an advanced modality that utilizes laser-generated thermal energy to directly target macular lesions on the retina. Although laser treatment often yields marked clinical improvement, improper application may adversely affect visual acuity.
