Sodium hyaluronate contains numerous water molecules, conferring excellent moisture-retention properties. It moisturizes the cornea, promotes corneal epithelial repair, and facilitates corneal epithelial expansion. Consequently, it is highly effective in treating superficial punctate keratitis secondary to dry eye and postoperative dry eye following myopic laser refractive surgery.

Sodium hyaluronate eye drops primarily contain sodium hyaluronate, a substance that functions like a sponge—capable of absorbing large quantities of water molecules. These water molecules are gradually released from the sodium hyaluronate solution, creating a moist environment for corneal epithelial cells and thereby providing enhanced protection to the ocular surface. How Effective Are Sodium Hyaluronate Eye Drops?

Sodium hyaluronate eye drops are indicated for use in Sjögren’s syndrome, dry eye syndrome, and exogenous conditions such as postoperative dry eye, drug-induced dry eye, ocular trauma, and contact lens–associated dry eye. Due to its high water-binding capacity, sodium hyaluronate exhibits excellent moisture-retention properties. It helps lubricate the cornea, promotes corneal epithelial repair, and facilitates corneal epithelial cell migration and spreading. Consequently, it is highly effective in treating superficial punctate keratitis secondary to dry eye and postoperative dry eye following refractive laser surgery (e.g., LASIK). The typical dosage is one drop per eye, administered five to six times daily; frequency may be adjusted according to symptom severity. Generally, a 0.1% concentration of sodium hyaluronate eye drops is used; however, for severe cases or suboptimal response, a 0.3% concentration may be prescribed.

1. Environmental modification is essential upon diagnosis of dry eye. Maintaining optimal ambient conditions can help control symptoms.
