How Traditional Chinese Medicine Treats Chronic Pelvic Inflammatory Disease
Chronic pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is a common gynecological condition characterized by a prolonged course and high recurrence rate. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the pathogenesis of chronic PID involves accumulation of damp-heat and blood stasis obstructing the uterine channels. Classic herbal formulas such as *Shaofu Zhu Yu Tang* (Lower Abdomen Blood Stasis-Dispelling Decoction) and *Gui Zhi Fu Ling Wan* (Cinnamon Twig and Poria Pill) are commonly prescribed orally to clear heat and detoxify, invigorate blood circulation, resolve stasis, regulate Qi flow, and alleviate pain.

Oral administration of herbal medicine alone often yields slow therapeutic effects, and drug concentrations may be insufficient at the local site. Given the anatomical proximity of the pelvis to the rectum, retention enemas using herbal preparations allow direct absorption of the medication through the rectal mucosa into the pelvic region—resulting in enhanced bioavailability and prolonged maintenance of effective drug concentrations. Moreover, the warming effect of the herbal solution improves local microcirculation, thereby facilitating resolution of inflammation.
