Does Bactroban® promote or resolve pus formation?

Bactroban® resolves (i.e., helps eliminate) pus—it does not promote pus formation. The Bactroban® brand includes two formulations: (1) Bactroban® ointment, whose active ingredient is mupirocin; and (2) Bactroban® wound disinfectant spray, whose active ingredient is benzalkonium chloride.

Bactroban® possesses a unique chemical structure distinct from all other antibiotics. It potently inhibits the isoleucine-binding site on bacterial isoleucyl-tRNA synthetase, thereby suppressing bacterial protein and RNA synthesis.

Mupirocin ointment is an antibiotic topical preparation effective against Gram-positive bacteria. It is primarily indicated for superficial skin bacterial infections, as well as for treating furuncles, carbuncles, and folliculitis. It helps gradually resolve inflammatory papules by eliminating causative bacteria. Benzalkonium chloride, a disinfectant, exhibits bactericidal activity against Escherichia coli and other skin-surface bacteria, making it suitable for wound or surgical-site disinfection.

Mupirocin demonstrates potent antibacterial activity against aerobic Gram-positive cocci—particularly Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, and Streptococcus pyogenes, which commonly cause skin infections.
