Introduction
Everyone has their preferred sleeping position. Some pregnant women enjoyed sleeping supine (on their back) before pregnancy. Whether they can continue sleeping supine during pregnancy depends on the specific gestational week and duration of sleep. During early pregnancy, sleeping supine is perfectly safe. However, after 20 weeks of gestation, pregnant women are advised to sleep primarily in a side-lying position.

Everyone has their preferred sleeping position. Some expectant mothers have long favored sleeping supine (on their back) before pregnancy. Whether they can continue this practice during pregnancy depends on the specific gestational week and duration of supine sleep.

1. Can pregnant women sleep supine?

During early pregnancy, sleeping supine poses no problem. However, as gestation progresses and the fetus grows, the enlarged uterus may compress the body’s largest vein—the inferior vena cava—when lying supine. This compression can lead to decreased blood pressure, resulting in supine hypotensive syndrome. In severe cases, it may even trigger placental abruption, endangering both mother and baby.

Therefore, after 20 weeks of gestation, pregnant women are advised to sleep predominantly in a lateral position. While many expectant mothers know that left-side sleeping is considered optimal, it is not necessary to maintain this position exclusively throughout pregnancy; right-side sleeping is also acceptable. Additionally, brief periods of supine positioning—such as for less than 30 minutes—are generally safe.
