Introduction
Causes of pain when swallowing: First, upper respiratory tract infection. When the upper respiratory tract is infected by bacteria, the entire pharyngeal region becomes affected; bacterial irritation of the throat leads to pain upon swallowing. Second, tonsillitis or pharyngitis. Painful swallowing commonly occurs during episodes of tonsillitis or pharyngitis.

The throat is one of the more delicate and easily overlooked parts of the human body. In daily life, neglecting proper throat care may compromise throat health. Sore throat is a common symptom, and in severe cases, it can impair speech and cause significant pain even when swallowing liquids or food.

Causes of Painful Swallowing

1. Upper Respiratory Tract Infection (URTI)

When the upper respiratory tract becomes infected with bacteria, the entire pharyngeal region is affected. Bacterial irritation of the throat leads to pain specifically during swallowing. If soreness occurs only upon swallowing, the infection is likely mild; however, if pain persists even without swallowing, the condition may be more severe. In such cases, anti-inflammatory medications are recommended—such as watermelon frost lozenges or ribavirin lozenges—and oral administration of Yinhuang Granules.

2. Tonsillitis or Pharyngitis

Tonsillitis or pharyngitis often manifests as painful swallowing. These conditions commonly occur when immunity is weakened or during periods of excessive fatigue. Initial treatment may include antibiotics such as amoxicillin, along with traditional Chinese medicine preparations like Xuanmai Ganju Granules or Jinguolan tablets. Another frequent and relatively straightforward cause of painful swallowing is “excess internal heat” (a concept in Traditional Chinese Medicine). For heat-related sore throats, consuming cooling, heat-clearing foods—or drinking chrysanthemum tea or lotus seed heart infusion—may provide relief.

Home Remedies for Painful Swallowing

Saltwater Gargle

Gargling with warm saltwater helps cleanse the oral cavity, soothe and moisturize the throat, reduce bacterial load, and promote natural healing of the pharynx. Lemon juice gargles may also be beneficial for sore throat sufferers.

Warm Chamomile Compress

Applying a warm chamomile compress to the throat offers rapid pain relief. To prepare: steep dried chamomile flowers in boiling water for five minutes, strain the liquid, soak a small towel in the infusion, gently wring out excess water, and apply directly to the painful area until the towel cools. Repeat as needed for severe discomfort. This method exerts analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects while improving local blood circulation to alleviate throat pain.

Medication

If throat inflammation or infection persists without improvement, prompt medical consultation is advised. Under physician guidance, appropriate proprietary Chinese medicines may be prescribed—often yielding highly effective results.
