Introduction
In fact, there are many causes of constipation in infants. Common causes include intolerance to breast milk, which may manifest as hard stools; insufficient water content in formula milk, which can also lead to hard stools; and certain common congenital conditions—such as Hirschsprung disease—which may present with difficulty passing stool or abnormally dry stools.

After birth, breastfeeding is a commonly adopted feeding method for infants. However, some babies frequently exhibit symptoms such as dry stools and reduced bowel movement frequency. Consequently, caregivers often become anxious and should understand how to appropriately monitor their infant’s condition—and recognize when intervention is necessary.

What to Do If a Newborn Does Not Pass Stool

There are numerous potential causes of infant constipation. Common contributors include intolerance to breast milk, insufficient water content in formula milk, and certain congenital conditions—such as Hirschsprung disease (congenital megacolon)—which may also manifest as difficulty passing stool or abnormally dry stools.

For infants experiencing constipation, initial management focuses on dietary adjustments. This may involve modifying the feeding regimen—for example, switching to a different formula or increasing fluid intake—to help soften stools. Additionally, medications such as probiotics (to regulate gastrointestinal function) or oral lactulose solution (to soften stools) may be used. In cases of severe constipation, glycerin suppositories (e.g., Dulcolax® Pediatric Suppositories) can be employed to assist with bowel evacuation, thereby preventing anal mucosal injury caused by excessively hard stools.

Dietary modification remains critically important. For instance, adjusting the formula composition or selecting an age- and tolerance-appropriate formula may improve stool consistency. In older infants, introducing fiber-rich complementary foods can also effectively alleviate constipation.
