Introduction
Clinically, patients with colorectal cancer typically do not experience anal pain. Importantly, once colorectal cancer develops, it causes a range of clinical symptoms. The earliest symptom is often a change in bowel habits or stool characteristics—for example, some patients may experience increased bowel movement frequency, others may develop diarrhea, and still others may notice blood or mucus in their stool.

Most patients with early-stage rectal cancer are asymptomatic. As the disease progresses, symptoms may include changes in bowel habits, hematochezia (blood in stool), purulent or bloody stools, tenesmus (a persistent urge to defecate despite an empty rectum), constipation, and diarrhea. Stools gradually become narrower. In advanced stages, patients may develop bowel obstruction, weight loss, and even cachexia. So, does colorectal cancer cause anal pain? Let’s explore this further.

Does colorectal cancer cause anal pain?

Clinically, patients with colorectal cancer typically do not experience anal pain. Importantly, once colorectal cancer develops, it often produces a range of clinical manifestations. The earliest symptom is usually a change in bowel habits or stool characteristics—for instance, increased frequency of bowel movements, diarrhea, or blood- or mucus-streaked stools.

Additionally, patients with colorectal cancer may present with abdominal pain, abdominal distension, nausea, vomiting, weight loss, fatigue, fever, and anemia—symptoms that warrant prompt medical attention. If any of these signs appear, patients should seek evaluation at a reputable hospital without delay. Provided there are no absolute contraindications to surgery, surgical resection is generally recommended as the primary treatment. Postoperatively, some patients may require adjuvant therapies—including chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and/or radiotherapy—to optimize outcomes and support long-term health.
