Introduction
Thrombophilia refers to a heightened predisposition to thromboembolism resulting from inherited or acquired deficiencies in anticoagulant proteins, coagulation factors, or fibrinolytic proteins—or from acquired risk factors. Thrombophilia arises from an imbalance in the body’s hemostatic regulatory mechanisms, which may be triggered by genetic factors, trauma, prolonged immobilization, or other causes. Inherited thrombophilia is associated with certain hereditary disorders.

Thrombophilia refers to a heightened tendency toward thromboembolism resulting from inherited or acquired deficiencies in anticoagulant proteins (e.g., antithrombin III, protein C), coagulation factors, or fibrinolytic proteins—or from acquired risk factors. Thrombophilia arises from imbalances in the body’s hemostatic regulatory mechanisms, which may be triggered by genetic predispositions, trauma, prolonged immobility, or other causes. A detailed analysis follows:

1. Hereditary Causes

Hereditary thrombophilia is associated with certain inherited disorders. Hypercoagulability—often stemming from reduced concentration or activity of key endogenous anticoagulants such as antithrombin III and the protein C system—is a major contributing factor to thrombophilia.

2. Trauma

Trauma promotes thrombosis primarily through tissue factor release, vascular endothelial injury, and postoperative immobilization. According to international data, without prophylactic antithrombotic measures, the incidence of surgery-associated venous thrombosis may reach 50%. However, because most cases are asymptomatic or only mildly symptomatic, they are often overlooked. The incidence of venous thrombosis varies significantly across different types of surgical procedures.

3. Prolonged Immobilization

In conditions such as paralysis, chronic illness requiring prolonged bed rest, or limb immobilization with casts, impaired muscle-mediated venous return leads to venous stasis, thereby increasing susceptibility to venous thrombosis.

Besides the above causes, malignancy can also induce thrombophilia. During treatment, patients should follow a low-fat, low-salt diet; limit intake of fried foods; emphasize light, easily digestible meals; consume ample fresh vegetables and fruits; and maintain adequate hydration. A light diet and sufficient fluid intake effectively reduce blood viscosity.
