Introduction
It is recommended that the patient consult an otolaryngologist (ENT specialist). Clinically, this condition primarily presents with a sensation of a foreign body in the pharynx; patients may also experience symptoms such as dryness and discomfort in the throat. During clinical evaluation, the otolaryngologist will examine the patient’s pharyngeal structures. Initially, a tongue depressor is typically used to inspect the posterior pharyngeal wall and both tonsils. In some cases, further evaluation may be performed using indirect laryngoscopy or flexible electronic laryngoscopy.

“Plum Pit Qi” (Mei He Qi), literally meaning “plum pit qi,” is a condition characterized primarily by a persistent sensation of a plum pit obstructing the throat—difficult to cough up or swallow, coming and going intermittently. Clinically, patients experience an abnormal sensation in the throat but without impairment of swallowing or eating.

Which Department Should Patients with Plum Pit Qi Visit?

It is recommended that patients consult an otolaryngologist (ENT specialist). Clinically, this condition most commonly presents with a foreign-body sensation in the pharynx, often accompanied by symptoms such as dryness or discomfort in the throat. During evaluation, the ENT physician will examine the pharyngeal structures—including the posterior pharyngeal wall and bilateral tonsils—typically using a tongue depressor. In some cases, further assessment may be performed via indirect laryngoscopy or flexible electronic laryngoscopy.

Once diagnosed, patients with Plum Pit Qi may receive symptomatic treatment with lozenges or traditional Chinese patent medicines commonly used for pharyngitis. Importantly, Plum Pit Qi is considered an emotion-related disorder; symptoms often worsen with emotional distress or consumption of spicy or irritating foods. Additionally, clinicians must rule out potential underlying psychological disorders, as well as esophageal or gastric conditions that may mimic or contribute to these symptoms. Patients are advised to follow a light, bland diet, avoid spicy or irritating foods, and abstain from smoking and alcohol consumption.
