Introduction
Except for the heart—which is a rare site for tumors—the mediastinum as a whole is a common location for mediastinal tumors. Tumors arising in the superior mediastinum may cause thoracic inlet syndrome when they produce compressive symptoms. Tumors originating in the anterior or posterior mediastinum are typically asymptomatic when small.
Common sites of mediastinal tumors can be described as follows: Among all structures within the mediastinum, the heart is a relatively rare site for tumor development; conversely, all other mediastinal regions are common locations for mediastinal tumors.
Tumors arising in the superior mediastinum may cause thoracic inlet syndrome when they exert compressive effects.
Tumors originating in the anterior or posterior mediastinum often remain asymptomatic when small; however, as they enlarge, they may produce compressive symptoms leading to corresponding clinical manifestations.
