In women with regular sexual activity who have not used any contraceptive measures, a missed period lasting more than one week strongly suggests pregnancy. In fact, pregnancy involves far more than just amenorrhea—numerous physical changes also occur. So, when does nausea and vomiting of pregnancy typically begin? Let’s explore this further.

When Does Nausea and Vomiting of Pregnancy Occur?

Nausea and vomiting of pregnancy generally appear around 40 days after the last menstrual period. Mild nausea and vomiting are usually benign; eating easily digestible foods—and avoiding greasy, spicy, or irritating foods—can help. Oral vitamin B6 may alleviate symptoms, and excessive anxiety is unnecessary. It is recommended to take folic acid supplements, abstain from sexual intercourse, and avoid physical overexertion.

If nausea and vomiting become severe—significantly disrupting sleep and daily activities, or even causing vomiting upon drinking fluids—prompt medical evaluation is advised. A urinalysis should be performed; if ketonuria is detected, hyperemesis gravidarum must be considered. Hospitalization for intravenous fluid replacement and symptomatic treatment is then indicated. With appropriate supportive care, vomiting typically improves, allowing continuation of the pregnancy. However, if symptoms worsen—for example, with development of high fever, jaundice, tachycardia, or Wernicke encephalopathy—immediate pregnancy termination may be necessary.
