Introduction
Ichthyosis is typically caused by genetic factors and manifests as prominent scaling on the patient’s skin, along with white or brownish skin lesions resembling fish scales. The skin becomes extremely dry and may be accompanied by mild pruritus. Scratching with the hands often leads to shedding of scales. Symptoms are generally milder in summer but significantly worsen in winter, adversely affecting skin appearance.

Ichthyosis is a group of inherited disorders characterized by abnormal keratinization of the skin, primarily manifesting as dry skin accompanied by fish-scale-like desquamation. This condition typically presents in childhood, with predominant involvement of the extensor surfaces of the limbs and/or the trunk. Affected skin appears dry and rough, with rhomboid or polygonal scales resembling fish scales or snake skin. Below, we address the question: “What does ichthyosis look like?”

What does ichthyosis look like?

Ichthyosis causes visible scaling and fish-scale-like skin lesions, along with marked skin dryness.

Ichthyosis is usually inherited and leads to prominent scaling, as well as white or brownish skin lesions resembling fish scales. The skin becomes extremely dry and may be associated with mild pruritus. Scratching often results in further scale shedding. Symptoms are generally milder in summer but significantly worsen during winter, adversely affecting skin appearance. Patients should consult a dermatologist for evaluation and management. Under medical guidance, topical application of compound lactic acid cream or urea cream can help moisturize the skin and remove scales. For more severe cases, topical retinoic acid ointment may be prescribed to normalize epidermal keratinization and restore healthy skin. Daily skin care is also essential—soaking in a bath or taking a shower helps soften the skin, and applying moisturizer immediately afterward is highly recommended.

In daily life, patients should avoid consuming spicy or irritating foods (e.g., chili peppers, mustard) and refrain from scratching the affected skin.

The above provides an overview of the clinical appearance of ichthyosis. We hope this information is helpful to you.
