Introduction
The optimal age for circumcision is 9–15 years, as the penis has typically matured by this stage, allowing for better therapeutic outcomes post-surgery. If phimosis or redundant prepuce is left untreated, local accumulation of debris and secretions is likely to occur. Prolonged accumulation may lead to inflammation and adversely affect genital development. Circumcision helps prevent certain diseases.

Phimosis is a common condition among males; if left untreated, it can significantly affect daily life. What is the optimal age for phimosis surgery?

What Is the Optimal Age for Phimosis Surgery?

The optimal age for phimosis surgery is between 9 and 15 years old. During this period, the penis has matured sufficiently, allowing for better surgical outcomes. If redundant prepuce (i.e., excessive foreskin) remains untreated, it may easily lead to accumulation of local debris and smegma. Prolonged accumulation of such debris can cause inflammation and adversely affect the development of genital organs. Surgery helps prevent certain diseases. Postoperatively, proper local wound care is essential: keep the area clean and dry, wear loose-fitting and breathable underwear, and avoid seafood or spicy foods.

Circumcision effectively prevents smegma accumulation, reduces infection risk, exposes the glans penis, decreases glans sensitivity, and thereby lowers the incidence of premature ejaculation. Removal of smegma significantly reduces the risk of penile cancer.

First, wear loose-fitting underwear. Typically, after surgery, the physician applies a dressing over the wound and places a protective gauze drape to minimize friction against the glans. Second, sexual activity must be avoided for at least 30 days postoperatively to prevent wound dehiscence or bleeding. Since individual healing rates vary, wound recovery time differs accordingly.
