Effects of Salvia Miltiorrhiza Tablets
The primary active ingredient in Salvia miltiorrhiza tablets is *Salvia miltiorrhiza* (Danshen), the dried root of the plant *Salvia miltiorrhiza* Bunge, belonging to the Lamiaceae family. It is mainly cultivated in Sichuan, Anhui, Jiangsu, Hebei, and Shandong provinces. Harvested in autumn, the roots are cleaned of stems, leaves, and soil, moistened until pliable, sliced, and then sun-dried. Danshen has a bitter taste and a slightly cold nature. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), it is regarded as having effects comparable to those of the “Four-Ingredient Decoction” (Si Wu Tang). What are the therapeutic actions of Salvia miltiorrhiza tablets?
Therapeutic Actions of Salvia Miltiorrhiza Tablets
These tablets not only promote blood circulation and resolve blood stasis but also nourish the blood. Consequently, Danshen exerts effects including promoting blood circulation, resolving stasis, and dilating blood vessels—thereby enhancing myocardial contractility, improving cardiac function, and preventing or mitigating arteriosclerosis, especially coronary artery disease. Furthermore, Danshen delays cellular oxidation and aging. Modern research has revealed that certain bioactive constituents in Danshen can enhance cellular activity and exert antagonistic effects against mechanisms underlying human aging.

Danshen may affect renal function by stimulating potassium ion secretion from the cortical portion of the renal tubules. Excessive potassium secretion by the kidneys leads to increased urinary potassium excretion and subsequent hypokalemia. Thus, prolonged use may easily result in potassium deficiency, manifesting as generalized fatigue and muscle aches.

Long-term use is not recommended. If symptoms improve, patients should seek medical evaluation promptly and, with their physician’s approval, discontinue the medication or reduce the dosage. Self-extension of treatment duration must be avoided. We hope this information is helpful to you.
