Introduction

The novel coronavirus is a previously unidentified strain of coronavirus not previously found in humans. The pneumonia outbreak in Wuhan was also caused by this novel coronavirus. Understanding the transmission routes of the novel coronavirus plays a positive role in preventing novel coronavirus pneumonia. So, what are the transmission routes of the novel coronavirus? Below is an introduction.

Transmission Routes of the Novel Coronavirus

1. Close-range droplet transmission

Droplet transmission is one mode of airborne transmission, whereby pathogens are dispersed into the air via coughing, sneezing, or talking by infected individuals. Susceptible individuals may become infected if they inadvertently inhale these droplets. Importantly, droplet transmission has distance limitations—typically, infection occurs only when individuals are in close proximity.

2. Contact transmission

Contact transmission generally refers to the spread of bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens through physical contact or ingestion. Recently, heightened vigilance against novel coronavirus pneumonia is essential. Avoid contact with confirmed or suspected cases of novel coronavirus pneumonia to prevent infection.

How to Prevent Novel Coronavirus Pneumonia

1. Wash hands frequently

Hands come into contact with numerous pathogens, including coronaviruses. Handwashing is a well-established preventive measure. It is recommended to wash hands thoroughly with soap and running water for at least 20 seconds after coughing or sneezing; before touching the mouth, nose, or eyes; before eating; before and after food preparation; after using the toilet; and after contact with animals. When soap and running water are unavailable (e.g., while traveling), alcohol-based hand sanitizers containing 70–80% alcohol may be used.

2. Wear masks correctly when going outdoors

Avoid crowded places whenever possible and maintain distance from individuals exhibiting flu-like symptoms. If visiting such locations is unavoidable, wear a mask properly to reduce infection risk. Medical surgical masks offer effective protection against respiratory infections. To wear correctly, fully unfold the pleats, cover the mouth, nose, and chin completely, and press the metal nose clip firmly to ensure a snug fit against the face.

3. Avoid contact with wild animals

Minimize contact with wild animals and refrain from hunting, selling, purchasing, or consuming wildlife.

4. Maintain personal hygiene

When coughing or sneezing, avoid covering your mouth and nose directly with bare hands. Instead, use a tissue or bend your elbow to cover them. Dispose of used tissues in a hazardous waste bin and thoroughly wash your hands afterward.

5. Monitor for atypical symptoms

Seek immediate medical attention if you develop symptoms such as cough, sputum production, fever, or breathing difficulty. Additionally, consult a healthcare provider promptly if you experience chest pain upon deep breathing, tachycardia, sudden worsening of symptoms after apparent improvement from cold or flu, or chills.

In summary, the novel coronavirus spreads primarily via close-range droplet transmission and contact transmission. We urge everyone to take proactive measures against novel coronavirus pneumonia: wash hands frequently, wear masks correctly when outdoors, avoid contact with wild animals, practice good personal hygiene, and remain vigilant for unusual symptoms. Should you develop cough, sputum production, fever, or breathing difficulty, seek medical evaluation immediately.
