Introduction
Neonatal dacryocystitis results from residual embryonic tissue at the distal end of the nasolacrimal duct that fails to undergo normal involution, leading to obstruction of the distal nasolacrimal duct, stasis of tears, and secondary bacterial infection within the lacrimal sac. Neonatal dacryocystitis is a relatively common ocular condition characterized by persistent epiphora (excessive tearing) in infants, often accompanied by copious purulent discharge from the eyes.

Neonatal dacryocystitis is currently a relatively common infectious condition. To prevent complications associated with this disease, infants should be taken to the hospital for timely treatment. Can neonatal dacryocystitis resolve spontaneously?

Can neonatal dacryocystitis resolve spontaneously?

Neonatal dacryocystitis may resolve spontaneously in some cases. It is often caused by nasolacrimal duct obstruction and/or congenital underdevelopment in infants. It is recommended to begin lacrimal sac massage as soon as possible—four times daily, each session lasting approximately 10 minutes. Following massage, topical anti-inflammatory eye drops should be administered to control inflammation and infection. If ocular discharge ceases, use of the eye drops should be discontinued; however, lacrimal sac massage should continue. Spontaneous resolution without intervention is uncommon. Generally, the younger the infant, the more effective the massage.

Neonatal dacryocystitis results from persistent embryonic remnants at the distal end of the nasolacrimal duct, leading to obstruction, tear stasis, and secondary bacterial infection within the lacrimal sac. It is a relatively common ocular disorder in newborns, characterized primarily by excessive tearing and copious purulent or mucopurulent ocular discharge.

If neonatal dacryocystitis is suspected, prompt medical evaluation and preventive management at a hospital are essential to optimize prognosis and increase the likelihood of spontaneous resolution. The duration of treatment with Tobramycin (Tobrex®) eye drops depends on individual clinical circumstances. We hope this information is helpful to you.
