Introduction
Early Signs of Pregnancy: 1. Fatigue is one of the early symptoms of pregnancy. 2. Missed or delayed menstruation is an early sign of pregnancy. In women of childbearing age with regular menstrual cycles and a history of sexual activity, a delayed period may indicate pregnancy. 3. Breast tenderness is an early symptom of pregnancy. 4. Elevated basal body temperature. 5. Nausea and vomiting.

Pregnancy is a significant milestone for women actively trying to conceive. Early pregnancy symptoms are numerous, and even before pregnancy is officially confirmed—i.e., between intercourse and definitive diagnosis—the female body may undergo subtle physiological changes if conception has occurred. Below, we detail the common early signs of pregnancy.

What Are the Early Signs of Pregnancy?

1. Fatigue

Fatigue is one of the earliest pregnancy symptoms. During the initial stage of pregnancy, women often experience pronounced tiredness, low energy levels, and an increased need for sleep. Fortunately, this phase is typically short-lived and resolves relatively quickly. Generally, women with regular sexual activity who miss their period by more than one week should seek medical evaluation—including a urine pregnancy test—to confirm or rule out pregnancy.

2. Missed Menstruation

A missed period is among the most common early indicators of pregnancy. In women of childbearing age with regular menstrual cycles and recent sexual activity, delayed menstruation strongly suggests possible pregnancy. Additionally, some women experience light vaginal spotting shortly after implantation of the fertilized egg—typically occurring 1–2 weeks post-intercourse. This irregular, minimal bleeding may also serve as an early sign of pregnancy.

3. Breast Tenderness

Breast tenderness is another hallmark early symptom of pregnancy. Rising levels of estrogen and progesterone stimulate breast tissue changes, resulting in enlargement, sharp or dull pain, and swelling. Some women also notice darkening of the nipples and areolae. Nipple sensitivity often increases markedly during early pregnancy but usually improves significantly by the third month.

4. Elevated Basal Body Temperature

An elevated basal body temperature (BBT) lasting more than 18 consecutive days is another early sign of pregnancy. Following ovulation, BBT normally rises slightly and remains elevated—if pregnancy occurs, it stays elevated beyond the typical luteal phase duration. Women may feel warmer than usual and notice a sustained increase in body temperature, which is entirely normal; however, some mistakenly interpret this as a fever.

5. Nausea and Vomiting

Nausea and vomiting—commonly referred to as “morning sickness”—are classic early pregnancy symptoms. These manifestations of early pregnancy reaction occur frequently during the first trimester and affect most pregnant women to varying degrees.

The above outlines the primary early signs of pregnancy. We hope this information proves helpful. For women actively trying to conceive, noticing any of these subtle changes following intercourse warrants a visit to a healthcare provider for confirmation—such as a clinical pregnancy test—to determine whether pregnancy has occurred.
