Introduction
If you consume alcohol the day before or the day after vaccination, you should postpone receiving the vaccine. Alcoholic beverages contain significant amounts of ethanol, which—once absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract—enters the bloodstream and participates in systemic circulation, breakdown, and metabolism. Alcohol consumption may also cause symptoms such as dizziness, facial flushing, and impaired consciousness. Therefore, you should not receive the COVID-19 vaccine on the day following alcohol intake.

To prevent COVID-19, vaccination campaigns are underway nationwide. However, some individuals inadvertently consume alcohol before receiving the vaccine. Can one receive the COVID-19 vaccine the day after drinking alcohol?

Can you receive the COVID-19 vaccine the day after drinking alcohol?

If you consumed alcohol on the day before or the day of your scheduled vaccination, it is advisable to postpone vaccination. Alcoholic beverages contain significant amounts of ethanol, which—once absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract—enters the bloodstream and participates in systemic circulation, metabolism, and breakdown. Alcohol consumption may also cause symptoms such as dizziness, facial flushing, and impaired mental clarity. Receiving the vaccine shortly after drinking may mask potential adverse reactions to the vaccine, making it difficult to determine whether subsequent discomfort is attributable to the vaccine itself—thereby compromising the safety and accuracy of post-vaccination monitoring.

Alcoholic beverages should be avoided for 2–3 days following COVID-19 vaccination. Additionally, foods that are known allergens or prone to triggering allergic reactions should also be avoided, to minimize the risk of exacerbating adverse drug reactions or allergic responses.

Foods such as spicy hotpot, barbecued dishes, chili peppers, and alcoholic beverages tend to be strongly flavored, pungent, and high in fat. Consumption of these foods can irritate the gastric mucosa and potentially trigger or worsen gastrointestinal side effects associated with the COVID-19 vaccine—such as nausea and vomiting. Therefore, it is not recommended to consume such foods before or after vaccination.
