What Causes Changes in Semen Color?
Many men notice abnormal semen color during ejaculation. If such discoloration is observed, it warrants attention. Abnormal semen color can stem from numerous causes—what factors influence changes in semen color?
What Causes Changes in Semen Color?
Inflammation within the body may lead to abnormal semen. Urinary or genital tract infections commonly cause semen to appear yellowish; certain bacterial infections may even turn it yellow-green. The presence of blood streaks or clots in semen—termed “hematospermia”—is frequently associated with prostatitis or seminal vesiculitis. Genitourinary tuberculosis or prostate tumors may also result in hematospermia. In cases of severe liver or kidney disease, semen often becomes dark yellow. Thus, semen color can provide preliminary clues regarding one’s overall health status.

Normal semen color is typically grayish-white, milky white, or pale yellow. With prolonged abstinence, semen may become more concentrated and appear dark yellow; similarly, older men often produce darker yellow semen. Recent excessive alcohol consumption, frequent intake of spicy foods, or habits such as working overtime, staying up late, or experiencing physical overexertion may also cause semen to turn yellow—and sometimes impart an unpleasant odor.

It is also important to eliminate unhealthy lifestyle habits—such as smoking and alcohol consumption—and instead adopt a diet rich in light, nutritious foods. Regular physical exercise is highly recommended. We hope this information proves helpful to you.
