How long does a cough last after a cold?
The common cold is a very familiar illness affecting people of all age groups. However, persistent and recurrent coughing often follows a cold. How long does it take for the cough to resolve after a cold?
How long does a post-cold cough last?
Coughing typically resolves within about one week after the onset of a cold. The primary symptoms of the common cold include nasal congestion, sneezing, rhinorrhea (runny nose), general malaise, and myalgia (muscle aches). Symptoms usually peak within approximately 48 hours and the illness generally lasts around seven days, resolving spontaneously; however, in some cases, symptoms may persist for up to two weeks. Fever is typically absent or low-grade in uncomplicated colds. Additional symptoms may include conjunctival injection, lacrimation (tearing), photophobia, and cough. Some patients experience cough and sputum production lasting up to two weeks. If symptoms fail to improve, medical evaluation is recommended.

In spring, colds are commonly of the wind-cold type in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Wind-cold pathogens invade the body through the skin surface, causing symptoms such as fever, headache, nasal congestion, and rhinorrhea. When wind-cold pathogens penetrate deeper into the body and affect the lungs, they may impair lung qi, leading to lung deficiency and internal heat accumulation. This results in stagnation of qi, cough, expectoration, and prolonged fever—conditions that, from a Western medical perspective, correspond to upper respiratory tract infections, which, if left untreated or inadequately managed, may progress to pneumonia.

When a child has a cold, ensure adequate fluid intake first and foremost. Secondly, guarantee sufficient rest and sleep. During a cold, offer the child light meals such as plain congee or mild, easily digestible dishes. If fever persists, physical cooling methods are preferred. If feasible, giving the child ginger tea may help dispel cold pathogens. Soaking the feet in warm water is another effective method for expelling cold. We hope this information proves helpful.
