Efficacy and Effects of Xiao’er Yanbian Granules
Xiao’er Yanbian Granules is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formulation classified as a heat-clearing agent. It functions to clear heat, relieve sore throat, detoxify, and alleviate pain.
This medication is indicated for pediatric patients with excessive lung-wei heat, manifesting as laryngopharyngitis (“Hou Bi”) or acute tonsillitis (“Ru E”), characterized by symptoms including sore and swollen throat, cough with copious phlegm, and oral or lingual ulceration. It is also suitable for children diagnosed with acute pharyngitis or acute tonsillitis presenting with the aforementioned TCM patterns.
The formula primarily comprises Honeysuckle Flower (Jinyinhua), Fibraurea recisa Rhizome (Jinguolan), Platycodon Root (Jiegeng), Scrophularia Root (Xuanshen), Ophiopogon Tuber (Maodong), Artificial Calculus Bovis (Ren Gong Niu Huang), and Bornel (Bingpian). Its principal therapeutic actions are clearing heat, relieving sore throat, detoxifying, and alleviating pain. Clinically, it is mainly used to treat throat pain, cough, excessive phlegm, and oral/lingual ulceration resulting from pediatric lung-heat syndrome. In Western medical terms, it may be employed in the management of acute pharyngitis and acute tonsillitis.

Among the principal ingredients, Honeysuckle Flower, Fibraurea recisa Rhizome, Artificial Calculus Bovis, and Bornel all possess properties of dispelling wind, clearing heat, detoxifying, and cooling the blood—thereby serving as the primary therapeutic components. Platycodon Root and Ophiopogon Tuber mainly act to moisten the lungs, resolve phlegm, and suppress cough, while Scrophularia Root clears heat, nourishes yin, and promotes blood circulation to resolve stasis.
Special note: This product is not recommended for children with diabetes mellitus. It is also contraindicated in cases of acute laryngitis; affected children should seek prompt medical evaluation at a hospital.
